37. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. 38. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the days when Noah entered the ark, 39. and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Matthew 24:37-39
Jesus makes it abundantly clear in His teaching that life on earth, as we know it, is coming to an end. Jesus will return with power and glory. He will raise up those who have fallen asleep. He will gather his people from far and wide. Those who trust in Him will be told, “Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the Kingdom.” Those who do not trust in Jesus will be told, “Depart from me, you cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels.” The Day of the LORD is coming and none but God the Father knows when. Therefore, Jesus says, “Be ready.”
As Christians, we are called to live with eternity in sight. Jesus is coming back. Until He does, people will be eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage and going on with their daily lives. Until He does, there will be some, like Noah, who trust in God and believe His Word. Until He does, there will be some who reject God’s Word and despise those He sends to preach it.
What does it mean to live with eternity in sight? It means recognizing that the end of time (either yours or the worlds) is coming soon and trusting in the person of Jesus. None of us know exactly when Jesus will return – God has not revealed it to us. Instead God has revealed blessed words of forgiveness and new life for those who believe and condemnation and Hell for the wicked. Let us therefore share with others what God has revealed to us in order that they might not be “caught unaware” but may instead live with eternity in sight.
